From Fashion Icon To Artists' Muse
In Mummified Barbies sculptor E.V. Day was moved to wrap five of the dolls in cellophane, twine and tape, like so many mini-King Tut's. Mummified Barbies acknowledges Barbie as an icon, "as idealized and exaggerated as any mythological depiction of Venus or Aphrodite," explains Day. "By concealing the attributes that characterize her image, I aim to locate Barbie in a long history of glamorized feminine figures. Mummifying and shrouding Barbie literally ties her into ancient and ongoing cultural practices of fetishizing the female form."
